Surprise Attack – Water EP
Keeping the DC area jam scene alive, Surprise Attack’s self-described “Mountain Funk” has spread throughout the Mid-Atlantic over the past couple of years. From prestigious festivals to some of DC’s and Northern Virginia’s favorite venues, these boys are continuously making waves in our nation’s capital. The five-piece band is pressing on with its newest release, the Water EP, mastered by Peter Larkin at The Lighthouse Santa Fe, NM. Released on February 17, 2018, this four-track EP highlights the band’s diverse talents throughout the record.
“M.D.M.A.” kicks off the record with a funky groove. Commanding drums and aptly placed syncopation from the band lead the way into a groovy chorus. “J.N.S.,” a shorter tune, keeps the dance groove in line before blasting into a wompy bridge. “Down & Out” opens up with a beautiful vocal harmony. This incredibly relatable tune presents many common woes that we face in our lives, some specific to DC life and some that apply elsewhere. The chorus, however, presents the true message of trusting in our friends to help us get by. A strong, head banging bridge section segues into one more beautiful chorus to end the song. Finally, “Train of Thought” closes out the album by showing off some of the band’s true strengths. Dissonant arpeggios open up the tune and resolve into a beautiful melody and verse. A heavy hitting solo section leads into a final verse before blazing its way to a close.
Overall, the Water EP is a brilliant release. The EP highlights all of the band’s influences and talents. From pure songwriting to progressive instrumental sections, the Water EP provides an illuminating glimpse into the musical world that is Surprise Attack.
